Simplify Your Shelfie

When Daniel and I first toured our apartment I was a bit overwhelmed at the amount of cosmetic work I thought needed to be done. However, besides the gorgeous large windows and natural light the first thing I noticed was the built in shelves in the living room. Of course, as a designer I was instantly envisioning the shelves filled with my pretty coffee table books and artwork. Flash forward a few months and I finally have the shelves the way I want them to be. Layering is the key to making any shelf look great, but I found in the past I layered a little too much. Now I like to start by playing around with a lot of different heights, colors and textures and omit items as I go along.

We gave our shelves an instant facelift by painting them White by Dunn Edwards in a semi gloss finish. The crisp white makes all of the accessories pop much better. Unfortunately the shelves are fixed and not with even spacing in between, so I filled in the larger area at the top with two pieces of art to balance out the space. Other items that are perfect for layering without being too cluttered are pretty candles, succulents and small plants, coffee table books, matches, baskets and small decorative objects.
