Tools For a Perfectly Styled Coffee Table

One of my favorite places to add decor in the living room is the coffee table. This drives some people crazy as it could potentially be used as a more functional space, but I look at it as a home for my prettiest books and light decorative accents. Our coffee table is not huge so I keep all accessories in a nice clean line and stick with the same fool proof formula. Below are the accessories I find myself pulling every time and the arrangment I use to keep things looking polished and fun.

Books, books and more books! They are called coffee table books for a reason, so why not display them in their proper place? I like to use neat stacks of books as the decorative anchor and stick to a somewhat monochromatic color palette. Obviously size and scale is important, so choosing books that don’t dominate the entire table is key. I am always rotating in new books with fun covers which is such an easy way to give your table a makeover.

In the center of our coffee table I always have a tray. I chose this white lacquer option from West Elm to help break up some of the wood and corral miscellaneous items that end up on the table like coasters and remotes. Since I don’t like accessories to look cluttered the only other accents I add are functional ones. A pretty and practical wick cutter looks nice next to a candle, as does matches in a glass jar. I also like to have small dishes or bowls to hold pretty matchboxes (and lets be real, sometimes candy). I finally just updated our white marble coasters and went with these beauties from St. Frank! I love just having fun with the coffee table and using it as a blank canvas to add a few of my favorite things.

Wait, coffee tables are for functional use?!! 😉 Haha, I don’t think I’ve ever used it for that… it’s ALWAYS been for decor purposes! And absolutely love yours + your tips! Ours currently houses books, tray, flowers and a candle! xo

I really like this. I use trays and books all the time but I like that you mentioned you line things up as your coffee table is small. Mine, too, and I could never get a right balance shifting and turning pieces at an angle. Still, I thought straight across was rigid. Thank you!

    Hi Jane,

Thank you so much! I feel like it’s always trial and error depending on the shape and size of the accessories!
