As much as I am looking forward to the Christmas season, I always hate to see autumn fade. This time of year in Northern California doesn’t have quite the seasonal foliage as New England or other parts of the country, but we do get some pretty magical foggy fall mornings. To celebrate this beautiful season coming to an end I got together with some friends, including Jen from Freckles on Fillmore, for a misty morning picnic.Torrey Fox captured the scene perfectly and although it was cold, it was so much fun to get bundled up in layers on a chilly morning.
A crisp morning picnic is incredibly serene and for this get together we wanted to keep the menu very simple. I put greek yogurt into Weck jars which makes them very easy to transport and looks nicer than a plastic container. Adding granola to cellophane bags and another jar of fresh blueberries allows you to create little parfaits once you get settled in. An assortment of pastries is always a good idea so we went with donuts, homemade cinnamon bread and soft blueberry muffins served on large wooden boards and seasonally festive plates.
We found the perfect spot in the trees to set up camp and layered vintage plaid Pendleton blankets to sit on. I like to bring some fun pieces to a picnic like apple crates to use as small side tables and an array of trays and cutting boards to pass food around. One of the best pieces to bring for a morning picnic is a large thermos for coffee or in our case, hot apple cider. A warm drink on a cold morning makes it that much cozier.
