Good Things Take Time

“Good things take time.” An incredibly simple, yet impactful saying embedded into most of our brains since childhood, but somehow can be much harder to put into practice. I think about this phrase all of the time and have been coming back to it more than ever since we moved into our apartment at the beginning of this year. I knew the transition to a new space would be hard for me for a myriad of reasons, but the main one being new spaces take A LOT of time to come together and for a nester like myself, the transitional period can be a little unnerving. We were in our last apartment for eight years, so by the time we moved out it felt incredibly lived in and homey. Of course there were always things I wanted to change and home is never “done”, but the overall bones felt like they were in a good place. No matter how much of your stuff you bring to a new space, it can not be replicated the same way. Nor would I want it to be, as a new home presents a new opportunity to play and experiment, but that is not done overnight.

I talk to so many of you daily in my messages and have found a common thread amongst us is a true impatience when it comes to designing your own home. Design is my job, but when it comes to my own home I often have decision fatigue (another common theme) and just can’t make up my mind. Or it simply takes a lot of time to track down what I am looking for at a price point I can afford. All of this to say, if you feel this way you are not alone. Maybe this post is just an open letter to myself – to calm down! In this new home I have been trying to really embrace the in between. We see SO many inspirational rooms from the moment we open up our phones, without considering the years of work that went into them or the owners personal collections. You cannot simply move into a space and go out and buy all of your belongings in a few months and expect it to look layered and lived in – unless you have a Bezos bank account and can afford all the antiques! The transition can be uncomfortable. You may feel inclined to rush and buy pieces you don’t truly love before you have guests over for the holidays, but I encourage you to slow down and not rush the process. I still don’t have art on most of my walls, tables are bare, shelves are empty and I have a dresser much too large for our bedroom. Of course all of those things bother me, but I know they will get sorted out eventually and I will be much happier in the long run that I took my time. Good things really do take time, sometimes a lot more than we anticipated. Home is a constant. It ebbs and flows – with the seasons, with your age, with your personality. It is a reflection of you and your family. Whether you are living in your dream home or a temporary rental apartment like myself, it is never done – so try to enjoy the process and take your sweet time!

What a lovely reminder for all of us to simply “take time”. Whether with our homes, the season we are on, our finances, relationships, ourselves.
Also, no one is thinking about our stuff as much as we do so we really need to just relax and allow things meant for us to come in at their own time.

    Lovely article! Xx
