Rugs That Are Not Jute

Rugs are a hot topic of conversation around here. It is no secret I have a deep love for natural fiber rugs. I have them in just about every room in our house and find the breezy look somehow pulls a space together pretty perfectly. They can look casual or polished. However, I get A LOT of questions about jute rugs and a lot of messages about suggesting alternatives. There is a bit of a misconception about natural fiber rugs in general. That they all shed horribly and aren’t soft under foot, but under the umbrella of natural fiber there are SO many different types and styles (I.e. cotton, wool and blends that are softer). I find jute easy to clean and perfectly fine with a baby, but since I get asked for alternative options all the time I wanted to highlight a few of my favorite styles that are not jute. Indoor/outdoor rugs are one of my favorite options to use and can go overlooked as an option for high traffic areas. These rugs are often constructed of polypropylene or a blend of materials and tend to be easy to clean, durable and sometimes even washable. Synthetic rugs are a great low maintenance option because unlike natural fibers they don’t shed and tend to be more cost effective.

I love a wool rug. They are soft and cozy underfoot, but because they are a natural fiber they do shed. Of course these rugs come in a ton of different styles in terms of construction. Some have a much lower pile and can be easier to clean.

In addition to jute or sisal, vintage rugs are my favorite to use. Of course this a broad term and vintage rugs can be constructed from various materials like wool or cotton, but I often gravitate towards a dhurrie or oushak style. These are typically really thin which makes them great for layering or placing in odd sized spaces like entryways and halls.
