The lighting struggle is real! I have been doing my job for ten years and decorative lighting is still one of the design elements I grind on the most when putting projects together. I got a lot of lighting recommendation requests recently, so I thought it was about time I put a new post together. There are certain spaces where a true flush mount is unavoidable (or looks best), so if you are looking for flush mount lighting I have a post on that here, but this post is all about adjustable pendant lighting – which is my go to for a variety of spaces. I tend to use them the most for flexibility since you can control the overall height easily. I find the stress of committing to a fixed pendant length knows no bounds. Of course there are some technical guidelines, such as a the base of a chandelier hitting a maximum of 36″ off of a table, but I often love to do things more by feeling in the space, since the rules don’t always apply. Overall ceiling height and scale/size of the light fixture all play a big role in the proper hanging heights. Chain and cord style pendants allow more room for adjustments since you can cut and shorten if need be. I am sharing some of my current favorites ideal for different rooms, but course these are all very interchangeable. photo source
