Playing With Pattern

Color and pattern are having such a big resurgence in design thanks to the beauty of more traditional English interiors. A lot of people lean towards the style, but aren’t quite ready to commit to patterned wallpaper with a matching drape. If you want to ease into adding more color and pattern into your space, I think one of the best ways to do this is playing around with accents like pillows, art and rugs. I still prefer a relatively neutral base, but I love having fun with throw pillows on the sofa for more interest. I have tried to do a few posts on pillow pattern mixing, but there is no real formula for this. I personally love the combination of stripes and block prints and will happily do a layering of different style stripes.

I think the important thing is to not overthink it – try what patterns you gravitate towards and just see how you like them together. I also think adding in at least one vintage pillow or textile helps tie the whole look together – there is something about that little bit of character that helps bring a look to life and can elevate a very inexpensive H&M pillow. Another tip; if you can’t find what you’re looking for, look for the fabric. So many of the pretty pillows you see in magazines are custom made with high end fabrics, but Etsy sells so many good vintage and new fabrics by the yard that you can have made into pillowcases at a local workroom or even through certain Etsy vendors.
