I have mentioned numerous times that I love to pull inspiration from movies and have even done blog posts on my love for Nancy Meyers here and here, but I thought I would do a post on some other favorites. The allure of a great movie home is that they are supposed to look lived in. They often lack the polish we see in styled interior photos – the couch cushions are a bit messy, the layers are abundant and above all, they look collected. It’s like seeing into a home you love without it being perfectly tidied up for a photo shoot. You want to sit on the couch and watch a movie or have a cozy dinner party at the dining table. They pull you in, so I am constantly pausing and scanning the background to see all of the details. I look at the lighting, the wall colors, how it all flows together and tells a story.

Notting Hill

One of my favorite cozy spaces is the friends house in Notting Hill. The dinner party scene has given me so much inspiration for my own apartment. It feels intimate and although the space is incredibly neutral, it is filled with thoughtful layers. As always – an abundance of accent lamps, shelves filled with books and pretty wall art make this home feel so inviting and timeless. This movie is from 1999 and everything about this set up feels current (minus the TV).

Practical Magic

Possibly one of my favorite movie kitchen ever – another 90s set that I would happily take today. Of course because the set designers were none other than Robin Standefer and Stephen Alesch of Roman and Williams fame. It helps that the kitchen is massive, so there is plenty of room for dozens of bowls filled with dry goods, citrus and bread, but I love the simple details like hanging garlic and candlesticks on the wall. Overall it has a French feel with dough bowls, copper pots and a giant wood work table as the island. The entire house is magical, especially the greenhouse and I will always love Sally’s store.

Call Me By Your Name

This entire movie is so beautiful and instantly makes me want to summer in the Italian countryside. The home almost served as a character, filled with antiques that compliment the age of the home. The dad’s office is one of my favorite rooms with its subtle hint of colors, giant fireplace and glorious built in bookshelves.

You’ve Got Mail

Another classic I watch every year, Meg Ryan’s apartment still gets me every time. There are lamps in every room, including the kitchen and tons of beautiful wood pieces like her oversized desk and pine dresser. Of course the molding details and bay window add to the charm, but the warm color palette and homey touches make this another timeless interior.

Of course I love SO many movies and didn’t include them all. Other favorites are the house from About Time, What Lies Beneath, Stepmom, A Good Year, Sabrina, Under the Tuscan Sun, The Talented Mr. Ripley and obviously every Nancy Meyers movie.
