What I Always Look For When Shopping for My Home

Sourcing furniture and accessories for projects or my own home may seem like it could be daunting, but it has become one of my favorite components of design. For me, it always feels like a game – trying to put a puzzle together and constantly searching for the missing pieces. I know many of you struggle with this. There are so many options now, it can be intimidating and overwhelming. Some of you have asked how I go about shopping either online or in person. I recently shared a lot of my shopping sources, but I have found that I always end up looking for the same components when I am out shopping. I thought I would break down my process a little bit and what I am always on the hunt for!

Unique Accents

This is always my number one no matter where I am. I constantly have my eyes peeled for quirky accents that will bring life into my home. I got the bust above at a consignment store and instantly knew I would be taking it home. I love the texture, the contrast between the stone with the base and the size was perfect for our living room. I am usually looking for vintage touches, but I find a lot of new stuff that looks equally as cool. It could be candle holders, a basket, a picture frame – anything that doesn’t seem like I just raided a Target (even if I did).

If an accent is new, I like it to have at least one of the following – texture, character, or the ability to layer well with other things I already own. That is how my apartment has a lot of continuity – everything plays off of each other and it is a mix of vintage and new. I personally search for warmer tones and crisp whites and then something to offset all of the neutrals. I always find plenty of unique accents online. Here are some to give you an idea of what I look for.

Kitchen Accessories

Although our kitchen is tiny, it is one of my favorite rooms to style. I swear I could open a kitchen only store filled with bowls, crocks, cookbooks, etc! I get so excited to bring pretty accents into our kitchen and constantly look out for those special details like vintage serving boards, marble trays and olive oil that tastes good and looks pretty. Whenever I go up to wine country, I almost always come home with something for our kitchen – even if it’s something small like a salt bowl.
