Classic Autumn Decorating

I have posted a few shots of our apartment as I start decorating for fall and have gotten a slew of questions about decorating for the holidays without being too thematic. I did a post last year on Halloween specific decorating and sadly have misplaced some of my skulls and small accents. This year I simplified decorating even more and wanted to walk you through where I shop for holiday decor and how I layer pieces in without looking over the top.

Add In Dark Accents

Y’all know my space is always extremely neutral, but when fall rolls around I like to add in some darker accents to offset everything. This could be as simple as a darker colored throw or the black mirror I brought into my entry. I got this ghost throw at Home Goods and love how it looks draped over our striped chair. The mirror is from one of my all time favorite vintage stores, Elsie Green and has transformed how our entry looks. I put out some darker candles, vases and even trays. Small touches can make such a big difference and don’t have to be expensive.

Texture Goes A Long Way

I love bringing in textured elements in the form of fresh branches or unique florals that last a long time. Berry bittersweet branches have the most beautiful yellow orange hue and can last for a few weeks before dying. Branches tend to be less expensive than flowers and it is so nice to have something that feels decorative, but that I don’t have to store. A bowl of white pumpkins, fresh kumquats or pears is a pretty wood dough bowl are all easy ways to feel festive without investing in decor. Having some great texture will layer your space seamlessly and feel more on season.

I also gravitate towards small decorative accents that kind of blend into the rest of my decor. I got my white living room skull at Acres in Saint Helena and have seen similar styles at Hudson Grace and Home Goods. Scent is also huge for me when it comes to seasonal decorating. I touched on my favorite fall candles in this post.

Do you have a link for your pillows? I underestimated how gray our new couch would be, and desperately need to warm my space up.
